I guess they have to be very careful to do their due diligence as it’s going to be a total hornet’s nest, but yeah it’s hardly likely to be that Rushdie kicked his dog or scratched his car.

One of the doziest things I've seen is a colleague taking The Satanic Verses to Iran with him on a work trip as his reading material.
You could see the clouds clear from his eyes when I pointed out that the locals might not appreciate his book of choice.
I told him to bin it during transit through Dubai, but the cheapskate shoved it to the bottom of his bag and took his chances.

New York police just named the suspect in the attack on Salman Rushdie as Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old from New Jersey. .....................authorities said, there is not yet any indication of the motive of Rushdie’s attacker.

I enjoyed the Satanic verses and Midnight's Children is great even though I am not much of a Magic Realism fan normally. .
Hope he survives this.

The Satanic Verses is a complex but brilliant novel. It includes an hilarious and devastating reimagining of the origins of the Quran. I hope that people will read it, and read from it, more than ever. Because what happened in New York today cannot be allowed to win. The illiterate cannot be allowed to dictate the rules of literature. The enemies of free expression cannot be allowed to quash it. The attacker should get exactly the opposite of the response he will have hoped for.
